Israel Railways has expanded and improved train service in recent years. Trains run more frequently to more destinations, there are more train stations in the major cities, and the trains are more comfortable.

Because of heavy traffic on many roads, travel by train is recommended whenever possible.

There are four stations in Haifa including on the beach (Hof HaCarmel), at the Port (Mercaz HaShmona), at Bat Galim and at the swank Lev HaMifrats mall with 23-plex movie theater (Hutsot HaMifrats/YesPlanet). Trains travel as far north as Nahariya, and as far south as Beer Sheba. There are multiple direct trains to Tel Aviv Sunday through Friday that run less than an hour. Trains do not run on Shabbat or on Jewish holidays.

Train tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth or vending machine at the station. Seats on some trains can be reserved in advance.

You can plan your trip using Rakevet Israel’s interactive website to find out train times and destinations. The English link to their site can be found at: http://www.rakevet.co.il/EN/Pages/HomePage.aspx
