The Haifa Museum of Art

The Haifa Museum of Art is one of the three great art museums in Israel. It houses contemporary Israeli and international art exhibits, viewing art as a holistic, unique, vibrant enterprise. As a discerning organization involved in the field of culture, we at the museum have dedicated ourselves to keeping tabs on every trend, cultural phenomenon or process which is typical of contemporary modern culture, as reflected in both the form and content of the plastic arts. The Haifa Museum of Art was founded in 1951 in honor of an exhibition of Marc Chagall works. Since 1977, the museum has been housed in its present building, which is situated in the Hadar district of Haifa. This is a unique stone edifice, originally built as a school in the 1930s. It was then declared a building to be preserved. The historic significance of the building stems from its geographical position at the edge of Wadi Nisnas, a central focal point of local culture, which acts as a linchpin for the three neighborhoods -the Jewish, Muslim and Christian - which meet at this site. The location of the museum therefore enables it to act as a multi-cultural and intercultural bridge, reflecting Haifa's special urban and communal wellsprings.
