Akko (acre) tour

Akko is one of the oldest continually-inhabited cities in the world, and this tour takes you back in time to the maritime capital of the Crusader kingdom, including a visit to the underground Knights' Halls. Deep beneath the citadel, these halls were built by the medieval Knights Hospitallers. The many fascinating architectural sites include complete streets and an underground city complex. Add the exciting experience of a walk along the top of the ancient city walls, among very few worldwide that have survived violent attacks and battles almost entirely intact.
Complete with watchtowers and defensive guns, the walls are exceptionally thick, and the adjacent sea highlights the need for such strong fortifications. The tour route also passes through the bustling market street, once the main thoroughfare of the old city and now renovated in the authentic Crusader-era style. The lively, colorful market stalls sell fresh fish, aromatic and colorful oriental herbs and spices, a huge variety of foodstuffs and many other items. In historic times, the sea was the main source of income for Akko's residents. Today, you can still see fishermen at work and enjoy some of their catches in the many specialty fish restaurants, including some well known eateries dotting the quay, with its Mediterranean ambience and lovely views of the sea. Remains of the 800 year old Crusader port are still visible.
